An outfit is not just an outfit. Accessories have the power to take your outfit from day to night, or from stylish to a super statement. What I love about accessories is that you can completely change the look of an outfit by adding them, mixing them up to suit the season, and mood as well.
Today I wanted to share with you five pieces will make the difference between just another outfit and a showstopper. A few accessories you can really invest in a never regret about it.
The statement necklace
This is the perfect accessory to lift any outfit in a block color, so for example, if you favor the monochrome look (and let’s face it, it’s a lifesaver) then a bold necklace in any color, or gold will add an intriguing twist.
If you’re already maxing out the color, try something neutral. So if you’re head to toe in brights, then ramp up the glamour with a chunky gold, silver, or rose-gold necklace.
The bag
Bags are always a great accessory to upgrade a look. From really small and embellished bags to big ones in fabulous materials. For example, Marni bags are a great choice to transform the look of an outfit. There are several different styles, and whichever you choose, you know you are going to be noticed. These fabulous bags add a touch of luxe to whatever you’re wearing and add that ‘brought together’ look to your outfit which I always look for.
If you’ve gone low key you can add a slight pop of color with one of their yellow, gold or fuchsia creations, or go for a classic look with a brown or khaki shopping bag or black suede-effect clutch.
The hat
A hat gives you so many options and looks, so if you haven’t already experimented with a headpiece, maybe you should now, both to upgrade a look and for bad hair days.
For a romantic look for summer, team an oversized straw hat with a flowing maxi dress, or even just add a floral headband if you’re channeling that fresh from the festival look.
For serious fashionistas, there is no cooler look than the fedora. They look just as good on girls as they do on guys. I find this works best with loose hair and really gives a too-cool-for-school vibe. Whether you’re wearing a sharp trouser suit or a pencil skirt teamed with a lacy top, the fedora is the ultimate showstopper. Also, baker boy hats are a style I’ve been wearing non-stop since last year.
The wrap
I love how versatile a wrap can be. For a classic look that could come straight off the streets of Paris or London, throw a soft cashmere, wool or silk blend wrap in a classic color (camel, cream or black) over your shoulders. I really like this look when it’s a monochrome day and I need something subtle to lift my outfit. Try a patterned or embroidered wrap for the evening, or for making a bold statement by day. As well as being a stylish accessory, the wrap is a great way to experiment with color as you don’t have to dress yourself head to toe in it.
The sunglasses
If there’s one accessory that promotes you from ordinary girl-about-town to superstar, then it’s got to be the shades. The most important is to know which styles suit your face shape and identify what kind of look you are going for. Oversized shades are always a winner in the glamour stakes, or for a true retro look go for cat-eye glasses, the bigger the better. Round sunglasses look pretty cool and quirky, while if you like the angular look you’ll find square glasses making a comeback this summer. Of course, they are more than just a fashion accessory, so choose shades that offer protection from 99% to 100% of UVA and UVB rays.
All these fabulous and versatile accessories are within everyone’s reach, so there’s no excuse for just getting dressed up without adding the finishing touches. I think accessorizing really is the most fun part of fashion.
