BLOGGING 101: IS IT A JOB?

1–2 minutes

You know the very usual and recurrent question “Which is your job?“. I’m asked this a lot when I meet new people, or when I have appointments to do my hair, nails, etc. I always get so scared when people ask me so, and I feel so weird saying “I’m a blogger“. I instantly start explaining myself like “I write articles, I work with brands, I shoot campaigns…” just to try to justify that being a blogger is actually a job.

I shouldn’t feel this shy when I talk about my job, and I neither should explain all the things that I do in order to show and prove that it is a real job. And I know I’m not the only one who feels the same way as I do.

For some reason being a blogger is so underrated. I’m not going to save a life as a doctor does, but we actually do a lot of work from different fields by ourselves. We must negotiate with brands, be stylists, makeup artists, models, photographers, writers, and social media specialists, among others.

The fact that blogging is not a career doesn’t mean it is not a real and respectable job. We should be proud of the content that we create and the empires that we build through social media. We should push ourselves into talking loudly and without any kind of embarrassment when someone asks about our job.

The people who criticize our work don’t know a single thing about it. It is not a 9 to 5 job. We can be 24/7 working and thinking about new content to do. Try to explain to them what blogging actually is and, if they just don’t want to understand it, don’t waste your time trying to justify yourself.

  1. So very true. I feel the same when talking about my blogging. I often prefer to say that I am i am “Editor of a fashion and lifestyle website” as I seem to get a better response. I think the problem is so many people eon Instagram these days set up as “bloggers” with no blog or website just to do brand features on their page. We get lumped into that same category which is not the same.

That’s exactly it! Because people really don’t know what this job is about, they think it’s all the same and it is definitely not!
